Skills? Or no skills?

What do you think of these people's skills?

How are your skills projects going? On Wednesday we will be filming you showing off your skills for our 'Kauri show-off' movie! Keep up the practice and you hopefully won't look like this!

Skills Project - Practice Video

We've been working hard to practise one skill - it has to be new and tricky one. Each student is setting goals, planning their coaches and resources and then practising while working on their next step.

Have a look at our progress!

Maths Success

Here is a great example of the line graphs some of us have been working on. I'm calling it - the Graph of the week! Well done, Gabby. We've been learning about putting the numbers on our x and y axis and making sure they're evenly spaced.

Here is another great example - this time of fantastic setting out. Many our our books are getting VERY sloppy in their presentation. Remember - a messy book is very hard to mark and to find the work you're needing to reflect on. It's very hard to improve if you can't look back and see what you've done.

Sophie W has the date and title in the right place, she has used a ruler and numbered all her questions! Nice job, Sophie!

Explain it like Beckham

Yesterday we had our first attempt at explaining how a random object in the class works. We used cue cards that read, 'Big idea, details, examples and summary' to help guide us through a good structure. Then we recorded our explanations in the folder below.

Have a listen in your groups and complete a self assessment - being especially careful to work out your next steps. Then go away and plan to meet them! I think there are LOTS of ways we can improve our explaining skills.

Hauora Field Trip

On Monday we went to Anderson Park to learn about what "Hauora" is. Here are some pics from our trip. This week we'll be creating some things to explain what we've learnt.

Our Tree is Alive!

Today our Kauri Tree sprouted some real leaves - it must have happened over night while we were asleep! Actually, we made the leaves and finally got some time to put them up. We all think it looks MUCH better than a brown stump in the middle of our room.

We'll be adding glittery leaves to our tree when we achieve our goals this year. I wonder how many 'success leaves' we'll grow?

Active Listening

Here's another chance for you to practice your active listening skills. Watch this story VERY carefully and use your listening skills.

BUT, here's the catch - the PURPOSE for you to watch and listen this story is that you will retell this story in your own words afterwards!

Now rewrite this story with as much detail as you can - the characters, the events as they happen in order, maybe even quoting what the characters say.

As an extra - can you explain what the message or moral of this story is? What did you learn from the story?

Learning with... Purpose!

These students are explaining what learning targets are. Can we describe what it means to learn with purpose (our word of the week) and what our learning targets are?
This week we will be posting 3 learning targets on our learning blogs. 1 learning target, a writing target and a maths target. Have a read of your classmates targets. Can you suggest things they could do to help them reach them? Is there something you did that helped you?

Athletics Self Improvement

Today we started training for our athletics champs coming up very soon. This fits VERY nicely with our 'Self Improvement' focus for our inquiry this term.

Here's a video of our first session at the high jump. We all came away from the time with Mrs Sinclair with at least one thing we needed to improve to be able to jump higher. What's yours?
